Jim, a very interesting podcast with John Halpin. I have two comments. I disgree with the definition of nationalism as simply an imaginary community to which a group of people are committed. If it is not tethered to a sovereign nation, it becomes the kind of identity group, hyphenated loyalty that TR condemned and weakens our ability to respond to American challenges. Moreover, other racial, ethnic, gender and groups in other countries don’t feel the same connection to similar groups in America. This brings me to my second point. Nationalism as a structure for international relations has failed when it fails to respect and understand the nationalism of other countries. This is the main reason why the liberal hegemonic system has failed in places like Iraq and China. Once we understand our differences, we can better find issues we can develop lasting agreement on
