In 1985, a tapestry of Pablo Picasso’s painting Guernica was unveiled at the entrance to the Security Council of the United Nations in New York. Amid the unresolved, prospectively unlimited conflict of the Cold War, it was a mute, poignant reminder of the reality of total war.
